Frequently asked questions

How can I become a member?

Visit us in Hammerfest and you can become a life-long member for a one-time fee of NOK 220.

I would like to give a membership to somebody as a gift. How can I do that?

Only people who have been to Hammerfest can become members (see statutes). Even an application for Elvis Presley to become member was turned down in 1973 on these grounds.

Do you protect polar bears?

No. The proceeds of the membership help us maintain and run the free exhibition about Hammerfest’s historic significance as a gate to the Arctic waters.

Can I see polar bears in Hammerfest?

No. The polar bear is a symbol for Hammerfest because of its long and proud history as a base for expeditions into the deep Arctic such as hunting and fishing trips. The polar bear stands for strength, willpower and creativity needed to survive in the Arctic.

Do you organize trips to see polar bears?

No. The nearest place to see polar bears is on the Svalbard archipelago which is almost a thousand kms from Hammerfest.

Why have I not received an invitation to the annual meeting?

We do not send out personal invitations to the annual meeting. The annual meeting takes place every third Sunday in January at 18:00 in Hammerfest. All our members are invited. You can sign up for the annual meeting here.

I would like to donate money to you. How can I do that?

Our donation's account details are: IBAN: NO9615060804483, BIC: DNBANOKKXXX, Hammerfest Turist AS, Hamnegata 3, 9600 Hammerfest
